Cave Creek Dam
Reno, NV

Overview

J-U-B performed a full dam reconstruction of Cave Creek Dam, a high-hazard structure owned and operated by the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), located about 20 miles south of Ely, Nevada. The dam had experienced issues of seepage and sloughing, which raised concerns regarding the structural integrity. The project included a comprehensive overhaul to improve the dam’s safety and functionality.

Key Improvements

The work involved the excavation of the existing low-level outlet and its replacement with a 30-inch steel polyurethane-lined low-level outlet in a concrete encasement, including an intake structure and energy dissipator at the outlet. Additional improvements included grout treatment for a cave feature in the abutment, the construction of a buttress berm with dual-stage filter and toe drain, and a parapet wall on top of the dam crest. The undersized emergency spillway was enlarged to pass the IDF, with riprap and concrete alternate spillway designs implemented. Further improvements included riprap armoring on the upstream and downstream embankment faces, discharge channel, and cut slopes. Finally, a new principal spillway was constructed adjacent to the emergency spillway to control the normal pool.

Construction and Design Team

J-U-B collaborated with Black Eagle Consulting and RB&G Engineering for the geotechnical aspects of the project. The construction management and design efforts aimed to ensure the dam’s long-term functionality and safety.
