Minidoka National Historic Site, Idaho – Bureau of Land Management

The Minidoka National Historic Site (NHS), operated by the National Park Service (NPS) in Idaho represents the exclusion and unjust incarceration experience of 13,000 Japanese American citizens and legal residents of Japanese ancestry during World War II. Adjacent to the site, on Bureau of Land Management land, a wind energy project was proposed within the viewshed of the NHS.

The Langdon Group conducted two situation assessments at different phases of the EIS and facilitated a Q&A meeting that focused on the Japanese American communities with connection to the NHS. The assessment provided insight into the role the NHS plays as a sacred place of remembrance and of historical significance for the community and the country. The vast open landscape and isolation all add to the educational and emotional narratives and are important characteristics to preserve. Those incarcerated and their families live in communities across the country, predominantly in west coast cities, necessitating the need for targeted outreach and engagement beyond the project area.
