Following the protests in response to the death of George Floyd in May 2020, the Salt Lake City Mayor and City Council formed the Racial Equity in Policing Commission to advise on policy changes that the SLC Police Department (SLCPD) should make to improve its focus on racial equity.
TLG led the facilitation of this group, all conducted virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The TLG team worked with the Commission members to develop recommendations to forward to the Mayor and Council focused on improving outcomes for communities of color in their interactions with the SLCPD. Another key aspect involved engaging youth in conversations about systems that impact them including those who had experienced bad outcomes with School resource officers. The ideas they shared was transformational for the process at-large – not just for the sphere they were asked to engage in.
